Sedgwick Court System & Jurisdictions

Several judicial instances operate in Sedgwick County, each handling specific categories of cases.

18th Judicial District Court is the court of general jurisdiction for Sedgwick County. It handles:

  • Criminal cases — from felonies to misdemeanors
  • Civil cases, including claims of any amount
  • Family law — divorce, child custody, alimony, protective orders
  • Probate cases — will approvals, guardian appointments, estate management of deceased persons
  • Small claims cases — civil disputes up to $10,000

Wichita Municipal Court handles violations of city ordinances, traffic fines issued by city police, and cases of lack of insurance. This court has a separate filing process and its own warrant system.

Juvenile cases and some categories of family cases also go through the district court, but access to these records is usually restricted by Kansas law.

How to Get a Copy of a Sedgwick Court Document

You can obtain a copy of a court document in three ways: in person, by mail, or online.

In Person

Contact the district court clerk's office at the Sedgwick County Courthouse:

Clerk of the District Court
525 N. Main Street, Room 714Wichita, KS 67203Phone: (316) 660-5800

You will need the case number or the full name of the party and the approximate filing date. The clerk can issue either a regular (uncertified) or a certified copy of the document.

By Mail

Send a written request to the clerk's office address, specifying:

  • Case number (if known)
  • Full name of the party
  • Type of document needed
  • Whether a certified copy is required
  • Return address and payment in the form of a money order or cashier's check

Certified vs. Regular Copies

A certified copy has the court seal and the clerk's signature — it is required for official use (e.g., submission to another court, immigration processes). A regular copy is cheaper and suitable for personal reference.
